Funny thing about Miami is that there are these old, crazy establishments that have been around forever. They remind me of this place that somehow lacked a cultural identity when I grew up here. It isn't the south it's Florida.
A few weeks ago I run into this old butcher shop: Smitty's. It's old school and all I can think is, "how this guy is still around?" Sawdust on the floor and all. I'm hungry and as we taste wine I order a Sandwhich. And what comes out is a SANDWICH. Stacked high and savory, not gourmet. No stupid bread but just great Italian cold cuts, peppers and oil and vinegar. Oh yeah some killer white potato salad, you know them kind like they serve at Katz Deli. No BS. Guy air dries his beef and says it all comes out of Nebraska where they are corn fed. Hmm, isn't grass fed better, who knows? One thing is for sure, he knows. I miss these kind of places, kudos to Smitty's.
Then there is Chez Porky in Pompano. This place doesn't make sense, a Pollack owns this BBQ/Cajun restaurant. We jump in to grab some celery sticks(salesperson's brother owns the joint.). Quick, just some celery and blue cheese dressing, holy mackerel that taste good. As the car is running outside we grab a bowl of some kind of curies gumbo soup, amazing and I know have to continue, what else is in this kitchen? Right, BBQ! Must try, and out it comes smoked but with a homemade sweet and spice sauce. I can still taste it and wow is it good. To top it off collards and a home made pickle. Maybe because I've eaten so high end in the last three months this stuff taste that good or maybe it really is and the other stuff is just useless self congratulatory food? Well congrats out to Porky's.
